Finding out the wedding anniversary meanings for your celebration this year is personal to the couple, it is not about trophy collecting, wedding anniversaries are about memories and using the anniversary lists is a great way to show you how far you have come. The fun part about choosing your gifts according to the lists is that some years it can be tricky, what do you buy the city loving couple when it is their straw anniversary? You could go out and buy great seats to the latest show or treat them to a table at the latest restaurant - all are lovely but if you could find the perfect gift from this year's anniversary meaning that would be the icing on the cake. Each year has a meaning, you have the traditional and modern anniversary lists to choose from as well as the anniversary flower list mix the lists up to find the perfect gift for your loved one each year, or set yourself the challenge of sticking with one list for every year. We are trying to stick with the traditional list - mainly because I never realised there were so many lists to choose from when we started our wedding anniversary celebrations and I am not too good when there are lots of choices.

The traditional anniversary list was first written by Emily Post in 1922 in her book "Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home" and has been added to over the years. The modern list is difficult to find the originator as there were lots of lists, some from card manufacturers and others more personal, now there is a standard modern list that combines the best.

Your 1 st anniversary is celebrated from the traditional with paper, from the modern with clocks and from the flower list with pansies.

Your 2 nd anniversary is traditionally with cotton or straw, from the modern list with china and with the flower cosmos.

As you can see there are lots of differences already! Luckily when you get to the big anniversaries of 25 th and 50 th there is a common theme of silver and gold. These anniversaries have been celebrated for hundreds of years in this way and both lists agree that your 60 th anniversary should be celebrated with diamonds and there are probably not many women that would disagree!

For your city loving couple, straw anniversary celebrations for their 2 nd anniversary could involve a basket filled with their favorite things or a romantic weekend away in a thatched cottage. There is always a gift that will fit perfectly this year's anniversary meanings.
